The Military Corps of the Republic of San Marino
Even the oldest republic in the world has military corps! Throughout history, their task has been to defend the freedom of San Marino.
Today there are four corps whose members are aged between 18 and 60 years.
In San Marino, military service is not mandatory.
All San Marino police forces have at least 3 uniforms: a winter uniform, a summer uniform, and the High Uniform which is worn on national holidays such as September 3rd or October 1st. (Here are all the national holidays of San Marino).
Civil Police
Although it is not strictly a military corps, it sometimes collaborates with the Gendarmerie for events and necessities. It mainly carries out surveillance duties in the territory regarding: civil, commercial, tax, fiscal, and food supply matters.
A section of the Civil Police is assigned to Civil Protection functions.
The Civil Police uniform is characterized by yellow tones for the upper body, while the jacket, trousers, and cap are blue like the flag.
Gendarmerie
The Gendarmerie Corps, whose brigades are spread across all nine Castles, was established in 1842.
The Gendarmerie is required to control public security, has judicial and investigative police roles, as well as an anti-drug division.
The Gendarmerie uniform consists of a black jacket and trousers along with a white shirt.

Uniformed Militia Company
When you see blue uniforms with white ornaments, musket, and bayonet, you are looking at the Uniformed Militia Company.
Together with the Council Guard, they are the oldest Sammarinese military corps, founded in the eighteenth century.
Guard of the Rock
Today, the Guard of the Rock monitors border access points and guards the most important institutional buildings, such as the Public Palace and Palazzo Begni, where they provide sentry duty and guard changing service.
Another duty of the Guard of the Rock is customs control and police.
The Guard of the Rock uniform is easily recognizable thanks to its green jacket and red trousers (in high uniform, while the daily uniform is mostly green).

Guard of the Great and General Council or Noble Guard
The Noble Guard was established in 1741 to protect the Captains Regent and the members of the Great and General Council.
They can be seen during public functions and National holidays. They are also the only Guards who can raise and lower the flag of the Public Palace.
The uniform of the Council Guard or Noble Guard is easily recognizable by its dark blue color adorned with yellow ornaments.
