Moving to San Marino: Complete Guide to Residency & Permits 2025
To move to San Marino, foreign citizens (who do not hold Sammarinese citizenship) must obtain the necessary documents to regularize their stay in the territory. San Marino does not issue entry visas but provides two main types of documents for stays longer than 30 days: residence permit and residency.
Residence Permit
The residence permit is a temporary authorization that regulates stays from 3 months to a maximum of 12 months, renewable upon request. The Gendarmerie’s Foreign Office manages and issues the permit.
Types of Residence Permits
- Standard: for tourism, work, family reunification (spouse and children), or cohabitation.
- Special: for specific reasons, including education, sports, medical care, assistance, rehabilitation, religious purposes, humanitarian needs, international volunteering, or vacation/work programs.

- Regular Residency: For family reunification, business activities, or management positions in Sammarinese institutions.
- Elective Residency: For foreign citizens establishing their residence in San Marino through real estate or financial investments. Has limitations (e.g., exclusion from public sector and state benefits). Converts to effective regular residency after 10 years.
- Atypical Residency: With preferential tax regime for foreign citizens who have never been residents in San Marino and generate income abroad. This also converts to effective regular residency after 10 years.
- Atypical Residency for Pensioners: Reserved for EU, Swiss, and other authorized countries’ citizens, with income generated abroad and legal requirements.
